As COVID-19 continues to evolve, booster vaccinations remain one of the most effective ways to protect yourself, your family, and the wider community. With the rise of new variants such as NB.1.8.1, staying up to date with booster recommendations is more important than ever.
Why Are COVID-19 Boosters Still Important?
In 2025, COVID-19 remains a significant health concern in Australia, particularly for older adults and people with weakened immune systems. The Omicron subvariant NB.1.8.1 has caused a resurgence in case numbers across the country, with health authorities urging Australians to stay protected through timely booster doses.
Vaccination not only helps prevent severe illness, hospitalisation and death, but also reduces the spread of the virus in the community. Immunity from previous doses and infections can wane over time, making regular boosters an essential part of ongoing protection.
ATAGI Booster Guidelines for 2025
The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) has updated its advice for COVID-19 booster eligibility and timing. Here's what you need to know:
Aged 75 and over: Strongly recommended to get a booster every 6 months.
Aged 65–74: Recommended every 12 months, but eligible every 6 months if preferred.
Aged 18–64 with severe immunocompromise: Recommended every 12 months, eligible every 6 months.
Aged 18–64 without severe immunocompromise: Eligible for a booster every 12 months (optional).
Aged 5–17 with severe immunocompromise: Eligible for a booster every 12 months.
Healthy children under 18: Not currently eligible for COVID-19 boosters.
ATAGI recommends using the Australian Government’s Vaccine Eligibility Checker to see your individual recommendations based on age and health status.
What Vaccines Are Available?
At North Brighton Medical, we currently have the Pfizer Comirnaty JN.1 COVID-19 vaccine in stock. This vaccine is approved for people aged 12 years and older. Unfortunately, we do not stock vaccines for children under 12 due to low demand. Patients with Medicare can book a COVID-19 vaccine through our online booking system.
You can also receive your flu vaccine at the same appointment if you’re aged 12 and over. This co-administration is safe, convenient, and recommended for eligible individuals.
Bulk Billed Vaccine Clinics Available
COVID-19 vaccines are offered in our bulk billed vaccine clinics during the week. These appointments are available to eligible Medicare card holders only.
If you do not have a Medicare card, we are unable to provide the COVID-19 vaccine at our clinic. Instead, visit the Vaccine Clinic Finder and select the option for clinics that offer vaccines to patients without Medicare.
Preparing for Your Appointment
Before your vaccine appointment, make sure your Medicare details are current. If you don’t have a Medicare-linked myGov account or need to enrol, you can:
Enrol in Medicare
Link your Medicare to myGov
Apply for an Individual Health Identifier (IHI) if you’re not eligible for Medicare
Please do not attend your appointment if:
You feel unwell or have COVID-19 symptoms (e.g. cough, fever, sore throat)
You’re waiting for COVID-19 test results or have tested positive
You are a close contact of a confirmed case

Maintain physical distance where possible
Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing
Wear a mask in crowded or high-risk settings
Have Questions About the COVID-19 Vaccine?
It’s completely normal to have questions or concerns about COVID-19 vaccinations. The Australian Government’s COVID-19 vaccine website offers detailed answers to frequently asked questions to help you make an informed decision.
Do COVID-19 vaccines prevent transmission?
Yes, COVID-19 vaccines can reduce the risk of transmission. They help prevent infection in many individuals, and for those who do get infected, the vaccines can lead to a faster immune response, reducing the likelihood of spreading the virus to others.
Are COVID-19 vaccines safe for children?
Yes, COVID-19 vaccines have been authorized for use in children and adolescents, with studies showing they are safe and effective in these age groups. Vaccinating children helps protect them and reduces transmission within the community.
Can I receive the COVID-19 vaccine if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
Yes, COVID-19 vaccination is recommended for those who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Vaccination during pregnancy can also provide protection to the newborn.
Is it safe to get the COVID-19 vaccine alongside other vaccines, like the flu shot?
Yes, it's safe to receive the COVID-19 vaccine at the same time as other vaccines, including the influenza vaccine. Co-administration can help ensure timely protection against multiple diseases.
